First Period Wrap

Pat Bateman picked up a boarding penalty just :35 into the game. The teams traded penalties through the first half of the first until Darin Olver was called for tripping at the 7:20 mark. The penalty was the last of the period and also led to the first goal of the game.

Matt Hunwick took a pass from TJ Hensick and skated untouched to the net, where he flipped the puck top-shelf over Stewie's stick-side.

Northern certainly had their chances in the first period as Matt Maunu fired a beautiful one timer from the face-off dot. Moments later Olver fired a wide open shot at Sauer.

Later in the period Derek May hit the post from the blue line and on the rebound Matt Siddall flung the puck through the crease.

The opportunities were nullified, however, when Michigan scored once more. This time the blow was dealt by Chris Summers after he picked up a Stewart rebound.

Less than two minutes later David Rohlfs scored once more for the Wolverines, slapping in a controversial goal. The marker came, once again, after a Stewart rebound that had slid to the right post. The sticks of four players came down on it as the goaltender collapsed onto the sliding puck.

After a short review, it was determined that Stewart had snatched the puck just a moment too late.

3-0 Michigan after one period

The first goal on Stewie was not pretty at all and he has been coughing up rebounds like mad. He has just seven saves on ten shots, but hopefully he can get into a groove...
