NMU had myriad chances once again in the second, including a (nearly) beautiful one-timer in front of Sauer. Santorelli took the pass from the boards behind the cage and deked at Sauer's toe until passing to the netminder's left shoulder and a waiting Sarauer.
Despite the opportunities, though, Nick Sirota fired in the only goal of the period at the 1:20 mark. He took the puck at the blue-line, streaking toward the net, and flung it in over Billy Sauer's shoulder.
At the other end of the ice, Brian Stewart flashed the same colors that he waved so pruodly against Ohio State. The NMU defense did their best to contain the explosive Michigan forwards, but it turns into a clinic whenever they touch the puck. The freshman was able to make save after groin-tearing, leg swinging kick-save and he has kept NMU in the contest entering the final period.
To win this game, NMU's defense needs to come through and they must capitalize on opportunities. Also, the Wildcats need to stay out of the box. It won't be easy to win a special teams battle with the Wolverines.
And maybe it just takes Stewie 20 minutes to warm up. We shall see.
3-1 Michigan after two periods
